Updates On Oahu’s Plastics Ban

Here are some quick reminders that will help you adhere to Oahu’s plastics ban which went into effect April 1st, 2021. The following disposable plastic service ware items are now banned on Oahu:

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags

with handles

Plastic Cutlery

Plastic utensils

including forks, spoons, knives, and sporks
Baran

(plastic grass in sushi)

Plastic Straws

Plastic straws

and stirrers

What your business CANNOT do:

Red Check

Continue to provide any of the banned products to your customers.

Purchase or restock any of the banned items.

Red Check

Provide cutlery and straws (including acceptable use items) to your customers without them asking.

What your business CAN do:

Green Check

Provide cutlery and straws to your customer upon request only. You may also create a self-service area.

Purchase compostable non-petroleum-based straws and cutlery.

Purchase acceptable use bags. Plastic bags WITH handles are banned. Plastic bags without handles may still be used as well as paper bags.

Use handle-less plastic bags only when they contain food that creates condensation, such as hot or cold food and beverages.
